Is It Difficult to Maintain an E-bike?

Whether you are new to e-bikes or a skilled e-bike rider. Whether your e-bike costs €500 or €2,000. If you want to extend the life of your e-bike and get the most value out of it as possible. If you want to make sure that every trip you take is a safe one. Then there are a few tips on e-bike maintenance that you need to know. With the proper e-bike maintenance and care shared in this blog, your e-bike will bring you endless riding pleasure.

The maintenance of an e-bike is a lot easier than you might think. This is because much of the maintenance is the same as for any regular bicycle. However, it can be overwhelming due to the extra electrical components it contains. If you take care of these components, you are less likely to encounter any serious problems. Unlike regular parts, there may indeed be a danger to your e-bike if you disassemble these electrical components yourself, and you risk voiding the warranty.

Happily, the battery and motor are durable components that require little to no direct maintenance. Unlike the traditional parts of a bicycle, which are consumable items that wear out, the electronics will last due to being sealed and waterproof. If there are any problems with the electronics, please consult the manufacturer directly to find out how best to proceed.

Maintenance of Low Wear Resistant Parts of E-bike

Like bicycles, the moving parts of e-bikes often need to be replaced with the ones they are used for, such as tires, brake pads, and chains. By simply maintaining them properly, you will be able to extend their life and save money. The basics of e-bike maintenance will help you identify the problems you encounter. Find the corresponding solutions in time to ensure you travel smoothly.

Another way you can slow down wear is to avoid riding in wet conditions, where debris and other contaminants can get into the drive line. Once your e-bike is wet or dirty, clean or wipe it down as much as possible before storing it. This doesn't mean you have to flush it with a high-pressure water gun; just gently wipe the frame and make sure the chain is dry and clean. Watch for any hazards that may be present in the bike's components during the cleaning process.

Maintenance of E-bike Tires

It's a good idea to regularly check your bike tires for embedded glass, rock chips, or other sharp objects, especially after riding routes with a lot of debris. These small embedded objects may not cause a blowout immediately, but can slowly pass through the tire as the wheel rolls, eventually causing a blowout. So to avoid repairs on the side of the road, please remove this debris promptly with your fingernails or small tools. Even simple repairs become more difficult because of dragging a heavy e-bike.

Inspect the sidewalls and tread of your tires regularly for excessive wear, damage, dryness, or cracking. Tires with any of these conditions can increase the risk of a blowout. Keep your tires properly inflated, as underinflated tires do not roll effectively and do not support your bike well. Check psi levels before each ride. Each tire has a preferred air pressure range measured in psi (pounds per square inch). Check the recommended pressure on the sidewall of the tire. As a basic reference:

  • Road bike tires should run between 100 and 140 psi.
  • City bike tires should run between 60 and 80 psi.
  • Mountain bike tires should run between 30 and 50 psi.

E-bike tires are designed to handle different types of road conditions over time, and eventually, they will wear out with frequent use. Depending on the number of miles you ride, your riding style, and factors such as road and weather conditions, you will need to replace your tires. Replacing worn tires is not only better for your e-bike, but it's also safer for you, minimizing the risk of a blowout.

Maintenance of E-bike Brake

Inspect and adjust the brakes regularly. Before each ride, look for any loose parts or cables and make sure the brake pads and rotors are not worn. While riding, perform a more thorough brake inspection. You can also hold both brake levers and swing your e-bike back and forth to make sure they engage properly. If you feel the brakes slipping while holding down the levers, we recommend that you take your e-bike to a bike store and have them perform a more thorough inspection. If necessary, they will also replace worn brake pads and rotors.

Check your brake pads regularly, especially if you are a frequent e-bike user. If they are worn out, replace them promptly. We do not recommend that you do this yourself at home unless you have the technical knowledge and experience to do so. If your brakes are hydraulic, you should have a mechanic at a bike store check the hydraulic system. Another check you can make is to simply make sure that the calipers are securely fastened to the bike frame. If they wobble when you touch them, you can tighten the bolts yourself. If the rotors are not spinning freely along the calipers, this may mean they are rubbing on the calipers. We recommend that you let a mechanic at a bike store handle this repair.

Maintenance of E-bike Chain

Clean and lubricate your chain regularly. It is ideal to keep the lubricant inside the chain to minimize the build-up of grit and dirt on the surface. This usually involves wiping the chain with a rag to remove old oil and dirt, and applying fresh lubricant in small amounts. Lubricate the chain with a wet lubricant in the winter and a dry lubricant in the summer. Remember to lubricate again after washing the bike. Then wipe off as much excess lube as possible, as it will only attract more grit. E-bike chains tend to require more frequent lubrication than non-assisted bicycle chains.

Regularly applying a good quality lubricant to your chain will ensure that the transmission runs efficiently. Doing this after every ride is a good idea, certainly after washing and drying your bike. Inspect and repair or replace your chain regularly. An easy-to-use chain wear indicator tool will alert you when to replace your chain before the rest of the drive-line wears too much.

Maintenance of Electronic Components of E-bike

Maintenance of E-bike Battery

The battery is probably the most important component of an e-bike. That's why it's always natural for e-bike riders to be interested in their range, capacity, and durability. Maintaining a sealed battery may seem impossible, but there are many ways to keep your e-bike battery in top condition.

The first is battery charging and storage. All lithium-ion batteries degrade and lose capacity over time. Storing the battery properly and keeping it charged will ensure a long life. To do so, avoid leaving batteries fully charged or empty for long periods. If you plan to store your e-bike for a long period, charge the battery to the 75%-80% range before removing it from the e-bike frame and storing it in a dry, climate-controlled indoor location. Check the battery once a month to make sure it is not less than 75% charged. Extreme weather is the enemy of e-bike batteries. Store your e-bike battery in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. In winter, especially when the temperature is below 0°C, charge and store the battery at indoor temperature and reinsert it into the bike immediately before riding.

The second is e-bike battery cleaning. If you disconnect the battery frequently, take the opportunity to clean it with a damp cloth and brush off any dirt from the connection with a dry brush. Occasionally, clean and gently wipe the battery contacts. Never use a high-pressure jet to clean the battery.

The third is to use the correct charger. While some battery chargers may be compatible with more than one bike, it is best to use only your matching charger. Batteries don't always charge the same way, so using an incorrect charger could damage your e-bike battery. Maintenance of E-bike Motor

The motor is undoubtedly the key component of any e-bike. Therefore, it must be maintained to ensure the safety and performance of your e-bike. Most modern e-bike motors are sealed, so there is little to no motor maintenance to worry about. If you do find a problem with your motor, contact a mechanic at an e-bike store to have it repaired. Generally, e-bike sellers will offer a warranty period. For reference, YosePower's battery and motor are covered by an 18-month warranty. Once you find any problem you can contact the after-sales service.
